Tips for Creating Your Perfect Writing Space

We’ve all been there. You’re just about to settle down with a cup of tea to indulge in the next chapter of your book, or to catch up with your favourite television programme and suddenly… BEEP BEEP! Your phone buzzes, the doorbell rings, someone requires your immediate attention or you remember that you have to go to the shop before it closes.  Life is full of distractions, and this can be especially tricky to manage when you are trying to write a book.
It is crucial that you find the right time and place to be at your most productive and creative. If you are in the frame of mind to write, then you should be able to do just that without worrying about distractions. If you are constantly being interrupted when trying to work, then your natural ‘writing flow’ will be broken and you may not progress with your book as quickly or as smoothly as you would like to.

But never fear! That’s where we come in. Below are some useful hints and tips to help you to find your perfect, peaceful writing space and to find the ideal time to sit down and work on your book:

  • Find your ideal writing space.
You must feel comfortable when writing, and part of this comes from finding a space which reflects your personality and creativity. Get rid of any negative associations too, you should feel happy and productive in your writing space.

  • Cut out distractions.
Switch off your phone, social media and emails when you are writing. Any messages can be picked up once you’ve finished working. You can always let people know that they won’t be able to contact you for a couple of hours while you are working.

  • Wake up early and take advantage of the peace and quiet.
The alarm goes off, but we all want an extra ten minutes in bed before we have to get up and start the day. Try and motivate yourself to get up an hour before everyone else and use the time to write in silence.

  • Write on your commute.
If you travel to work using public transport, you could use the time productively to jot down ideas for your book. Alternatively, you could use this time to plan a writing schedule for the upcoming week.

  • Keep pens and paper handy at all times.
When inspiration strikes, you don’t want to risk forgetting your ideas later. By keeping a pen and paper close by at all times, you will remove the risk of forgetting your ideas before you have had the chance to jot them down.

  • Don’t feel guilty about taking a break!
This point is the most crucial. We all need time to unwind after a long day, and we all do this in different ways. It is inevitable that we will all use some time during our day to relax, so try not to feel guilty about this. If you force yourself to write when you’re not in the mood, the results will not be as good as when you take a break and return to your writing space when you feel ready.
