The Bell Club

Paul Martell
‘George Winters died suddenly of Mondays’

As this opening zinger suggests, The Bell Club is a lively debut collection of poems assembled with wit and warmth, suggestive of the gentle absurdities and sensibilities of local and personal memory.  Many are shaped by the author’s experiences growing up in Norwich and around the Norfolk coast, but in striking and poignant ways, they move seamlessly from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to Maggie Smith and crocodiles in Vietnam.

There is a spareness to the description and a lightness to the emotion, which allow the reader space for their own responses. At times, this restraint creates a very moving effect.
The poems are at their best when combining the confessional with a lyric form of observational analysis and when focused on the detail of small moments to create striking, precise images
A gift for portraiture is also revealed in the poems: the Franco-American couple, the chip shop owner, the trombone player.

If your requirements for a modern poetry collection include modest but engaging elements of surprise, haunting- by the dead remembered, by romantic memories and by missed opportunities- though never indulgent or morose, and a combining of the confessional with a lyrical take on history and culture, then Martell’s The Bell Club is your new favourite.

Poppies Grow in the Wilderness

Izabela Bran
Betrayed by the two people she believed she could trust above all others, a woman feels alone, desperate, like she has nowhere to turn. But it’s only by owing to her feelings of grief and confusion that she finds acceptance and finally self-love.

In this stunning collection of poems, Izabela Bran allows the reader to see into her very heart and soul, laying bare emotions usually hidden deep, challenging the reader while offering comfort at the same time. An accomplished and beautiful debut, Poppies Grow in the Wilderness follows a journey, sometimes brutal, often poignant, through heartbreak, betrayal and despair, to acceptance, enlightenment and truth. For only when we are forced to examine our past can we find our true self, and realize that we love that self.

Whether you’re suffering in silence, have experienced grief, want to find who you truly are, or simply love evocative and spellbinding poetry, Poppies Grow in the Wilderness will captivate you and leave you wanting more.

Fractured Threads: The Awakening
H.D Woods

A young woman awakes in a hospital morgue in London. She climbs from the body bag in which she is encased and walks away. She has no heartbeat, no breath, no capacity to eat.
Strangled by her violent boyfriend earlier, she died. She is still dead.
In the far north-western corner of England, a mysterious cloud with no measurable substance appears over an area where Earth energies converge. And there it sits, day after day, never changing, just menacing. As reporters and tourists gather to witness the strange phenomenon, paranormal researchers work feverishly to discover what the cloud is and why it has appeared in this particular spot.
Desperate to explain what has happened to her, the young woman sets off on a long journey north, hoping to consult with the paranormal experts. However, much like the cloud, they are not what they seem. And as she starts to realise just what they are capable of, she wonders if she has made the worst mistake of her existence.
But there’s no escape. In a few days, an eclipse will plunge the area into darkness. And if the cloud is allowed to realise its full potential, then horror on an apocalyptic scale will be unleashed across the Earth.
It must be stopped. But at what cost?

They must face unknown lands, mythical creatures and their own fears in order to discover the truth.
