Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself...
I am a proud mother of three sons. I was born in upstate New York, grew up in South Florida and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Journalism and Communications. I’ve spent my adult life living in different parts of the U.S. and the past twenty-three years in North Carolina. I was a paralegal for many years before I began writing full-time in 2015. I love to travel internationally and find inspiration for my book settings in the various places I visit.
What first inspired you to start writing?
I’ve always had a creative imagination. As the youngest of three daughters, I was quite shy. I found my voice and my confidence in writing poetry, which then led to writing stories. In college, I explored many different types of writing and found that novels suited me best.
What made you want to work with Rowanvale and be published?
I never had much interest in traditional publishing. After a couple of poor experiences with hybrid and independent publishers, I discovered Rowanvale Books. I published the first book in my series, Finding Magdalena, and it was such a wonderful experience. I continued with Rowanvale for the next three books in the MagdalenaSeries. Every interaction with the staff was pleasant, professional and timely. The people I worked with took the time to get to know me and my writing style. That kind of personal service is difficult to find in this industry.
When you're not writing, what are you reading?
When I am not writing, I enjoy reading mysteries, thrillers and historical fiction. I also love being a beta reader for other indie authors.
Which work are you most proud of?
I am proud of all the books I have written. If I had to choose one, it would be my fourth book, Subterfuge. It shows my growth as an author, and it has won two awards. Those awards have encouraged me and made me more determined to keep writing!
What's your best advice for handling writer's block?
Writer’s block is the worst! I believe it happens to every author at one time or another. When it strikes me, I put my laptop away and try to work out different scenarios in my mind. If that doesn’t kickstart my writing again, I put the manuscript away for a couple of weeks and then come back to it with fresh eyes.
What's one thing you always have with you when you're writing?
The answer to that would be my laptop. I always have it in sight and take it with me when I travel, too. A steady supply of caffeine in the form of Coke is also a necessity.
What is one book you would take with you if you were stuck on a desert island?
If I was stuck on a desert island, I would bring a compilation of Jane Austen’s works. If that’s cheating, I would settle for Pride and Prejudice. Who doesn’t love Mr Darcy?
What is the best part about being an independently published author?
I love being an independently published author because it allows me the freedom to set my own deadlines. It suits my personality and creative process. Rowanvaleprovides exceptional services with its proofreading and copyediting and turns my manuscript into a beautifully packaged book.
What's next for you?
After four books, I decided to take a break from the Magdalena Series. I’m currently writing a crime thriller set in Chicago. It’s exciting to work with new characters and a story arc that is different from my previous books. I will eventually write another book in my series. I can’t leave my characters on a cliffhanger for too long!
