Who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself...
My name is Sam and I have been writing since I was in my early twenties. Growing up as a child, my passion had always been art. I enjoyed drawing my own comic books and would spend hours drawing mysterious and heroic characters. Once I became an adult, I started to prefer literature over illustration, and in 2003 I completed a writing course, which I did in the evenings. My teacher was a UK author called Maureen Spurgeon. She was a children’s book author and wrote books for Count Duckula, which was made into an animated series I enjoyed as a child. Once I completed the course, I started my very first draft of Gods of Athenia: Book of Souls. Now I work in an office full time but write whenever I can, which is hard when you are juggling a work/family life. I wish to finish the Gods of Athenia series and then go into a genre for a younger audience.
What first inspired you to start writing?
I started illustrating Gods of Athenia as a graphic novel when I was in university but it was not until I read Lord of the Rings and some of the Harry Potter books that I was inspired to write instead of illustrate the story.
What made you want to work with Rowanvale and be published?
The professionalism of the company was a sheer joy for me; the communication has always been brilliant and I hope to work more with them in the future. Everything from start to finish has been an amazing journey.
When you’re not writing, what are you reading?
I am constantly reading the Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion and Harry Potter books; I never get bored of them.
Which work are you most proud of?
Producing Gods of Athenia: Book of Souls.
What’s your best advice for handling writer's block?
Watch an inspirational movie that is the same genre as the story you are writing.
What’s one thing you always have with you when you’re writing?
A cup of coffee; I cannot write without one.
What is the one book you would take with you if you were stuck on a desert island?
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien.
What is the best part about being an independently published author?
You get to see your accomplishments and hold them in your hands without having the rejections and restrictions of traditional publishing.
What’s next for you?
I have already completed the manuscripts for Gods of Athenia parts 2 and 3 and have started the fourth and final manuscript which will bring the series to a close. I hope to get the second manuscript into publishing by 2025.
