Who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself...
I live in Brighton on the South coast of the UK with my wife Siân. I am a songwriter and musician with my band Murmurs of Earth, an occasional actor, and a dad to two surprisingly well adjusted kids.
What first inspired you to start writing?
My daughter lives in Brisbane, Australia and she loves reading. On the long flights between Australia and the UK I started writing stories for her to read, which have now developed into an ongoing series of children’s books.
What made you want to work with Rowanvale and be published?
I had already published 3 books, but regrettably my previous publisher went out of business. I was looking around for a new publisher to work with and I spoke to a number of companies before deciding to work with Rowanvale. I liked their welcoming and friendly attitude.
When you’re not writing, what are you reading?
I usually have both a fiction and non-fiction book on the go so that I can choose between them depending on my mood. At the moment, I am reading ‘The Secret Barrister’, about the work of the British Court system, and rereading ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert. Diverse eh?
Which work are you most proud of?
I couldn’t choose between specific books. I am proud that I have created a series of books with magical characters that children really seem to enjoy.
What’s your best advice for handling writer's block?
Don’t force it. Stories should flow naturally and organically. If you are blocked, let it go for now and if it’s meant to be, it will come back to you.
What’s one thing you always have with you when you’re writing?
I tend to write on my laptop and if I don’t have that to hand, then I’ll make notes or write on my phone.
What is the one book you would take with you if you were stuck on a desert island?
‘The Worse-Case Scenario Survival Handbook.’
What is the best part about being an independently published author?
Freedom, and the only imposed deadlines are those that you place on yourself.
What’s next for you?
I have another 6 books pretty much ready to go, so depending on how this first book with Rowanvale goes, I’d love for those to be published alongside ‘Mason and the Bees.’
