Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself...
My name is Michael Elia. I have Asperger's autism and I live in accommodation for people with autism in Maidenhead in Berkshire. I was born in September 1968 in Southampton, and I have dark hair and a beard. I have been writing published books since 1996 when I wrote Nature's Revenge. Then I wrote A Trio of Cartels and Web of Crime, which are the first two Dave Bradley novels, but they are only available in America, not in this country.
What first inspired you to start writing?
I have always had an interest in writing books since I was fourteen. After I wrote several books between 1996 and 2012, I struggled to find publishers, and I found a publisher in America called Rosedog, who are based in Pennsylvania. They published A Trio of Cartels and Web of Crime, but it was very expensive. I found Rowanvale Books in Wales through the psychology team at The Maples, a home for people with autism, and they published Nature's Revenge and Fear of the Unknown. Then I moved to Maidenhead and had Claws of Fear, Trouble Near Timlook, The New England Net and now Bent on Justice published.
What made you want to work with Rowanvale and be published?
I will stick with Rowanvale because they have lived up to their good reputation for supporting and helping writers. I have never had any problems with Rowanvale.
When you're not writing, what are you reading?
When I am not writing, I am reading all or parts of previous books I wrote.
Which work are you most proud of?
The work I am most proud of writing is The New England Net. This is the fourth Dave Bradley novel, full of drama, action and tension, and all the characters support and help each other. It is also sensitive and down to earth with ordinary, down-to-earth men and women who are up against a network of drug cartels called The New England Net. It is good against evil, and it has a happy ending.
What's your best advice for handling writer's block?
My advice for writer's block is to take as much time as you want away from your writing. Fresh ideas will come into your head. When you're refreshed, your style will flow more easily.
What is one book you would take with you if you were stuck on a desert island?
If I was stuck on a desert island, the one book I would take with me is a book with two novellas in one, No Greater Evil and No Greater Wickedness. This equals The New England Net in drama, tension and action, and shows the Timlook detectives supporting each other. They are sensitive and caring characters, but the main theme is a journey through Maryland and Pennsylvania full of danger from arms dealers, and in the second novella, the five detectives investigate a new arms gang in Philadelphia.
What's next for you?
The next book I am getting published is No Greater Evil and No Greater Wickedness. The next book I am writing is The Marion Weisberg Novellas. These are six novellas in one book about dangerous animals led by the Weisbergs. They fight rogue beasts, poachers and criminals. Marion Weisberg is the heroine. But before publishing this book, I have to get other Marion Weisberg books published, as well as The Merciless Mountains and Nature's Justice.
