Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself...
I grew up on a small cattle farm on the East Coast of Canada. Aside from writing, my passions include playing the piano, hip-hop music, and exploring the hidden wonders of our local landscape with my dog Yuri.
What first inspired you to start writing?
It’s a family affair. Combine a vivid imagination with a grandfather who held a deep passion for writing. All those stories needed to go somewhere!
What made you want to work with Rowanvale and be published?
Having always wanted a career as an author, I began with a journalism diploma and the goal of becoming a fixed feature in agricultural magazines. Once in the field I quickly realised I desired more freedom and creativity, and fewer politics, than that world offered. Always writing, I started to build a social media presence. When Rowanvale reached out to me, I quickly realised they were a great fit. Their print-on-demand method carries way less financial risk than traditional self-publishing models while also providing the distribution advantages of traditional publishing houses.
When you're not writing, what are you reading?
The list is pretty wild. My shelves are currently full of poetry, fantasy, Buddhist literature, psychology/anthropology texts, music history, and Metaphysical volumes. I just finished Light Is the New Black by Rebecca Campbell and Dirty South (Outkast, Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, and the Southern Rappers Who Reinvented Hip-Hop) by Ben Westhoff.
Which work are you most proud of?
Letters To My Lovers. Submitting that manuscript was a huge leap of courage. More than that, this book was an anchor in a storm. Throughout the publishing process I was suffering from healthcare burnout and the stress of a feline health crisis, but the demands of publishing really forced me to focus on the dream career Rowanvale is helping me create.
What's your best advice for handling writer's block?
Change your focus to something else you’re passionate about. All of my passions fuel my writing. If I’m stuck, the best thing I can do is get out in the woods with my dog, in the flower garden with my cats, or take a road trip with the latest hip-hop album. It’s like turning on a faucet.
What's one thing you always have with you when you're writing?
Coffee and a cat. As I’m typing this, Missy warms my feet, and Mufasa supervises from his wicker basket. Usually by the time the coffee is ready, he’s lying on the table (check out my socials for photo evidence). I’m a huge lover of flavoured coffee; my favourites at the moment are Java Moose’s Banana Bread and Pirate blends.
What is one book you would take with you if you were stuck on a desert island?
The Hound and the Falcon special-edition trilogy by Judith Tarr. It’s the only book I own two of. I discovered it was an out-of-print special edition after reading it to pieces - quite literally. I filed away the dust jacket, repaired the cover and spine with knockoff Mactac, then searched the internet until I found another copy. My first grown-up taste of fantasy novels, I only understood half of it when I stole it from my grandpa’s library at age twelve. Every time I’ve read it, I’ve caught new insights into the story that I didn’t catch before. It’s an all-time favourite and I will never grow tired of it.
What is the best part about being an independently published author?
I don’t have to worry about getting stuck (or forced) into one genre since poetry is not my only love. There are a few fantasy novels and short story collections up my sleeve and it would be lovely to publish everything under one name.
