Who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself...
I progressed in all stages of my educational studies until I reached university. After the first year of study, I left academia and moved towards practical life, which I felt was where the 'real university' was. I found more and better knowledge outside the university than inside the university.
All my writings are under the name "Hamid Qasi" which is an abbreviation of my real name. I was born in November 1993 in the city of Qarara in the M'zab Valley, a region located within the Sahara Desert in North Africa.
I care a lot about the Amazigh language. I search for it, write it and adore it because of its genius and originality. Therefore, I often include this literature and heritage in my books.
Tamazight is the mother tongue and the first thing I spoke. Because the mothers who gave birth to us are the most precious thing in human existence, as they were the reason for our existence, likewise, the mothers of other things in the universe, whether living or inanimate or language, must also be of a high value to us.
What first inspired you to start writing?
I want to be honest with you. Every time I try to answer what inspired me to write, I give a different answer than the previous one, probably because there were so many related events that forced me to write and there wasn't a single answer for me. What has come to me now is an incident which I think is one of the most important and motivating for me.
I remember well the motivating words I received from my teachers throughout my education after the literary texts I had been writing, but they did not all make me want to write seriously until I woke up one morning from a terrible dream.
I recovered with difficulty and wrote down what I saw so as not to forget it, and without going into the details of the dream, it was generally the idea of the end of the world due to global warming and the ruin of the city in which I was born. I lived through the scenes of death and panic that spread everywhere as if they were real.
I then decided to make an impression on the subject, especially after I read a study that says that the desert people of North Africa are the first to leave their homeland after the next 50 years because life there will become unbearable and impossible if the Earth's temperatures continue to rise.
Writing was the closest method in terms of feasibility and impact. So I wrote an unfinished book on this phenomenon, and then decided to leave it when it became clear to me that there were other, earlier and indirect convictions among the target audience that had to be corrected first.
I preferred to deal with this phenomenon according to a comprehensive writing strategy rather than a reaction that may not lead to a sustainable and guaranteed result. I think global warming is primarily an ethical issue and not just a scientific theory.
What made you want to work with Rowanvale and be published?
I got to know Rowanvale through their website, which topped the search results when I was trying to find pioneers in self-publishing. I liked the level of staff displayed within the site and thought they were qualified to accompany the freelance writer. In fact, the publishing journey there was amazing and very interesting.
When you’re not writing, what are you reading?
Usually when I'm not writing, I don't read, but rather look at various articles and studies. But when I am forced to read books, I tend to read about religion, philosophy, and education.
Which work are you most proud of?
My best book is my recently released novel, "Resurrection of Sin", inspired by a true story and translated from the Tamazight language; the first in the "Circles of the Universe" series.
What’s one thing you always have with you when you’re writing?
When I write, there are many things I rely on and cannot write without. The most important of which are the information I have collected on the subject, fiction, and a cup of mint tea.
What is the one book you would take with you if you were stuck on a desert island?
The only book I would take with me in a desert or on a secluded island is "Tafsir al-Nabulsi". This is my teacher and spiritual guide, full of wisdom, logic and reason. The book makes you calm down and immerse yourself in it deeply.
What is the best part about being an independently published author?
The best part about being an independently published author is that I learned a lot about reader behaviour and tendencies, which I wouldn't have known if I had relied on a literary agent or had published with a traditional publishing house.
What’s next for you?
The following work after a novel "Resurrection of Sin" is the second episode in the "Circles of the Universe'' series. This will hopefully be published in August next year.
Where can we find out more about you and your novel?
You can find audio recordings from the novel here and other extracts here.
