How to Avoid Vanity Writing

13/4/2023

Vanity publishing may be a tempting offer for aspiring authors. Traditionally, writers pitch their book to publishing companies who will only go with what they believe will make the most money. Vanity publishing offers a tempting alternative because the author pays the publishing company for all parts of the process. But be warned: it comes with huge risks, and there are many better alternatives.

  • Dangers of Vanity Writing
Publishing companies are businesses--they strive for a profit. When it comes to vanity publishing, since the cost is paid upfront by the author, it is in the publishing company’s best interest to maximise the profit they make. This can happen through cutting costs of distribution, marketing and production, leaving eager authors with an unsatisfying final product and low returns for the author. Due to the saturation of new authors desperate to get their work out there, predatory companies have found their perfect prey. If a company is charging extortionate costs to publish your work, it may be the sign of a scam. There are many safer methods for budding authors which will guarantee a more satisfying result, and which may offer you as much control as you would like.

  • Self-Publishing: Print and Digital
Although it may initially seem intimidating, self-publishing is a fairly low-cost and effective way to get your work out there. There are many different routes to take that put you either fully in control or give you the option to outsource parts of the publication process. If you would like print issues of your work, Kindle Direct Publishing offers a straightforward route. With them, you simply pay for the print and shipping costs, and order as many copies as you feel is necessary. Print prices vary depending on book size and length, but it’s cheaper than you think, averaging at around £4 per book.

Digital printing is even more straightforward. Sites like Amazon offer a simple and free way to distribute your work. Register your tax details, upload your book cover, title and description and add it to your Kindle bookshelf. Within 72 hours, it will be available to buy!
Our ’Beginner's Guide to Self-Publishing Book Distribution’ and ‘5 Self-Publishing Mistakes to Avoid’ blog posts offer further insight on what the smartest options are for you and your budget.

  • Assisted Self-Publishing
Self-publishing for writers with limited knowledge of the industry can be intimidating. Even the most experienced writers may need help along the way. That’s where assisted self-publishing companies, such as Rowanvale, can take some of the stress away. Rowanvale offers services for all stages of the publication process, making it easy to cover any area you feel you may need a hand in, while still allowing you to remain in control. Assisted self-publishing is a great alternative to vanity publishing as it offers the comfort of receiving help whilst also still giving you freedom to choose what is best for you. If you have any questions about self-publishing through Rowanvale, don’t hesitate to contact us!

Work hard, have confidence in your work, and publish wisely.
