Benefit's of Print-on-Demand Publishing

Print-on-demand publishing has transformed the way the publishing industry does business.

But what exactly is print on demand?

Known in shorter terms as POD, this is the process of publishing when a book is printed once an order for that book has been received. Using POD means no inventory is stored. Essentially, get a book order = print a book.

POD may seem overwhelming; however, the process has a lot of benefits. With POD the costs of upholding inventory, especially for independent publishers and self-published authors, has all but vanished. You can also use assisted self-publishing to pick and choose what services you may need help for, such as POD, which helps lower the costs for you as an author. Below are the main benefits that can be associated with deciding to print on demand.

POD Reduces Financial Risk

It is an affordable and efficient way to distribute your book. This way of printing allows you to determine how many or how few copies you print. Depending on the demand you can print anywhere between one copy to a thousand copies. This also gives indie publishers or self-published authors a way to eliminate the need to store titles.

Previously, publishers and authors would have to predict the demand. This meant that sometimes they predicted incorrectly. With POD this is never a problem, the level of financial commitment has been lessened, making it easier for you to publish your book without the worry of financial risk.

POD also gives you better control as a business owner. You are more in control of content, book marketing plans and financial outlay. However, it is also important to be aware of any legal issues you might experience if you decide to take full control through the publication and post-publication process.

POD allows you to make updates to existing titles

When choosing POD it is easy to make changes to your existing title. You could spot an error or find a review of your book that would be a great quote for the cover. This can all be added or changed with POD.

Before POD you would run the risk of not being able to make changes due to the amount of stock you would have already printed. Meaning you would have to sell errored copies or even get rid of multiple copies of inventory to start again.

This is another benefit of POD. You can edit files so that the books you print from that point onward reflect the updates you’ve made.

Quality and variety

The quality of POD has improved to an extent that there is barely any difference from an off-set printed book. This allows self-published books to look just as professional as traditionally published books.

You can choose from a variety of colour options, binding types, jacketed or unjacketed covers, trim sizes and much more when you publish with POD. The choice of what you create as an author is yours.

You never have to worry about running out of stock or compromising quality because POD eliminates the risk of your book going out of print. POD keeps an online database meaning your book will be available for as long as you allow it to be. This gives you readers access to your titles years after you have published the book.

Here at Rowanvale we can also help to take your manuscript and transform it into a physical book. By using our Paperback/Hardback Publishing Package, we can help you as an author to achieve this!
