Rose's WarTracy Batty
In 1937, Rose did not expect to marry Bill Taylor as the consequence of an unfortunate night out. Bill’s complete change of character after the wedding was a shock to her and his family--but not so much to Ted, Rose’s dad.
After the outbreak of war in 1939, Bill joins the army and their relationship deteriorates even more. With the violence Rose has suffered since the beginning of their marriage, she is quite pleased to have him gone, and she settles down to life, living with Bill’s mum Betty. After Bill’s brother Jack joins the RAF as a mechanic, his wife Sybil and their daughter also move into Betty’s so they can all support each other through the war and the bombing. Life changes again when the Americans join the war and are shipped out to Britain. The American GIs are a shock for the British, especially the black GIs and the way they are treated. When Ted encourages her to go out with friends, Rose’s life is turned upside down after she meets her friend’s fiancé, a black GI, and some of his friends, and she began to see what a real relationship could be like. We follow Rose as she journeys through the war, and all she comes up against. Genre: Historical Fiction, WW2 fiction
