The Editing Process

Do I need the whole editorial process if my manuscript has already been edited elsewhere?

Not necessarily. At Rowanvale, we offer a wide-ranging selection of Editorial Services, both in the pre-publication phase and during the publication itself. Therefore, if your manuscript has been edited externally, we may be happy to omit some aspects of the full editorial process. While this might be the case, our team will need to complete at least one full proofread as part of our service. This is simply one of our basic practicing standards at Rowanvale. We believe in the highest quality work, meaning a foundational proofread is necessary for both our own behalf and the author’s. To continue without would render us guilty of vanity publishing [link to Vanity Publishing vs Self-Publishing blogpost], breaching our moral obligation to our authors, whose books we aim to ensure – upon proofread – will be free of any structural, grammatical, or spelling errors and published at the highest possible standard.

At Rowanvale, we have a vast selection of Editorial Services including – but not limited to – Editorial Assessments, Developmental Editing, or proofreading and copy-editing as part of our Publishing Packages. To find out more about our self-publishing services, you can get in touch with a Publishing Advisor through clicking here. Alternatively, to contact us directly, e-mail at info@rowanvalebooks.com or give us a call on 029 2128 0200 where we’ll be happy to answer any of your queries.

What is the difference between the editing levels?

Whether you’re in the pre-publication phase utilising some of our earlier Developmental Editing Services and Editorial Assessments; using our Proofreading & Copy-Editing Service as a stand-alone option; or further down the publication process and editing as part of of a full Publishing Package, our editing levels remain consistent throughout. When we review your manuscript, we assess it in terms of light, medium, and heavy editing. Although these editing levels help our team distinguish the initial written standard of work, each manuscript will receive the same depth of editing, regardless of its categorisation.

The purpose of the editing levels allows the team to assess how well written the original manuscript is and, therefore, how much work is required to ensure it reaches the necessary publication standard. For example, should a manuscript be categorised as medium level, it can be determined that the sample was found to have more editorial errors (e.g., punctuation, spelling, tense, flow, or speech) than if it were categorised as light edit level. This allows our editorial team to calculate the amount of editing a manuscript requires prior to quoting a price, ensuring all of our authors are charged fairly and according to the work they submit.

What does the free editorial feedback involve?

As Wales’ largest self-publishing house, we consistently aim to show our authors the amazing benefits of working with us. This is why the editorial feedback that we provide alongside quotes for publication, is completely free of charge. On receiving a sample of your work, one of our Writing Advisors will review its contents, analysing aspects of both the text and storyline to determine what might benefit from editorial attention. Feedback can include detailed notes on dialogue structure, character development, sentence structure, and much, much more.

Doing this allows our authors an insight into our Proofreading & Copy-Editing Service, helping the author understand what this part of the publishing process might involve and giving them, and the Editorial Team, an idea of whether the manuscript is suitable for publication with Rowanvale. Whether you’re in the early stages of writing and seeking our Pre-Publication Editorial Services, or in need of our Publication Editorial Services for a more developed manuscript – our dedicated team of Writing and Publishing Advisors will be on hand to help throughout.
