Cover Design and Illustration

I really like the particular style of an illustrator I have seen. Are your designers able to replicate this style?

Our team of talented designers encourage authors to bring as many ideas as possible to the drawing board before embarking on design concepts. Whether you’re looking for a bespoke book cover as part of our Custom Book Cover Design Service or for eye-catching and cohesive illustrations to feature throughout your book with our Book Illustrations Service, our designers will always prompt you to bring as much information as you can about how you envisage things to look. Should you have a particular style of illustrator in mind, this will prove as invaluable inspiration for your designs.

While providing inspiration is encouraged, it’s important to note that our designers won’t be able to directly replicate another artist’s work. Under UK Copyright Law (hyperlink to Five Top Legal Challenges for Authors and Self-Publishers) our designers (or any other designers) are not permitted to replicate or ‘copy’ another illustrator’s work. Our team are, however, trained to produce a wide range of styles, meaning a particular style may be used as inspiration for artwork, given there are not too many immediate similarities.

To discover the range of styles our designers are able to work in, check out our Design Galleries which demonstrates some of our favourite works. Can I use cover designs or illustrations produced elsewhere?

Occasionally, authors may decide to have their cover design or book illustrations produced elsewhere – and that’s okay! At Rowanvale, we understand the great care our authors take with the production of their books. With this in mind, our main aim is to ensure all of our authors are wholly in control of the self-publication process and entirely satisfied with every decision made. Even though you may not opt to use our designers, our dedicated team will still be available and on hand to assist you with the process. Nevertheless, when contemplating going elsewhere for your designs, it’s worth considering some important factors.

If opting for eBook and Paperback publication, it’s worth mentioning that your artwork must be suitable for the book in both formats. For example, due consideration should be given by the artist to the layout of the blurb and the position of the publisher’s imprint and barcode. For those who choose to continue with external design, authors are responsible for supplying Rowanvale with their working files (i.e. Adobe Photoshop) and font files, ensuring fonts are either free to use for commercial purpose or have purchased licences. The author must also confirm that the font is suitable for print, not just for web.

Can I purchase a couple of illustrations initially and then purchase the remaining illustrations, once I know I am happy with the illustrator’s style?

If you have decided to use our Custom Book Cover Design Services or our Book Illustrations Services on an individual basis, and not as part of our Publishing Packages, purchasing an initial collection of illustrations with the intention of purchasing others at a later date is not a problem. At Rowanvale, we pride ourselves on our adaptable Self-Publishing Services that are uniquely tailored to our authors needs. Should this mean you feel more comfortable buying an initial collection of illustrations, our team will be happy to accommodate your requirements.

To do this, simply make the payment for your starting illustrations and the remainder can be paid for throughout the duration of the service. This allows our authors increased control over the design process, giving you the ability to ‘mix and match’ your illustrations. For instance, if your first set of illustrations are incredibly detailed but the others call for a more relaxed look, our professionally trained designers can effortlessly utilise a variation of styles. To discuss the range of styles on offer, our Publishing Advisors can communicate directly with our Design Team to determine which of our staff is is best suited to your project.
