Hugh Philpott
About Hugh Philpott:
Hugh Philpott is a former British Diplomat whose career spanned more than four decades with postings across Europe, North America, the Middle East and, most recently, Central Asia. He served as the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Tajikistan (2015–2019) and Turkmenistan (2019–2021).
A lifelong lover of music, Hugh often used song and performance as a bridge between cultures – earning him the affectionate nickname The Singing Ambassador. Now living on the Sussex coast with his wife Janine and ginger cat Tajik Tom Tat, he spends his time writing and contributing to the Review of Sussex Arts (ROSA). Hugh is the current Chair of the Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra and is also a proud founding trustee of the Gulrukhsor Women’s Centre UK, a charity for vulnerable women and children in northern Tajikistan.
When not writing or making music, Hugh enjoys exploring the landscapes and history of Sussex and curating playlists that capture the spirit of the place. He plans to take these musically inspired journeys further across the UK in the years ahead.
The Singing Ambassador – A Tajik Story is his first book. Hugh is currently working on the next part of that journey, The Singing Ambassador – A Turkmen Tale.
