Do I need to register my work for copyright protection before I send you a sample?

You do not need to register your manuscript for copyright prior to publication, as you are fully protected by copyright law from the moment that the work is fixed in a tangible form (i.e. you write the words down). You can go through an official copyright registration process, but this will provide no additional copyright protection and you may find you need to pay a cost for this.
