Entering NaNoWriMo this November

What is the aim of NaNoWriMo?

The aim of NaNoWriMo is to write a 50,000 word novel (or maybe even 50,000 words which will form part of a longer work!) between November 1st - November 30th.

How and when can I sign up?

You can sign up for NaNoWriMo at any time - and it is completely free to do so too! Just put "NaNoWriMo" into your online search engine and click on the big blue Sign Up! button when you are redirected to their homepage.

And how many words do I need to write every day to reach the 50,000w. goal?

To reach the 50,000w. goal within the month, you will need to write an average of 1,667 words per day.

Do I have to start a new novel on November 1st, completely from scratch?

According to its organisers, NaNoWriMo works best when you do begin a brand new project at the start of November. In their experience, writers do better when they are free to create something entirely ... novel (do you see what I did there?), so they encourage you to give yourself "the gift of a free slate".

That being said, NaNoWriMo is a very inclusive experience and it welcomes all writers (as it has done since 1999) at any and all stages of the writing process.

Just remember, though, that only words written between 00:00 November 1st and 23:59 November 30th count towards your goal. So if you are entering with a novel that you've already started, you don't get an automatic head start. Sorry!
