As they seek safe passage to Merethris to search for the Cloak of Impenetrability, the band of heroes face internal battles of their own. Azanda, the shieldmaiden, longs to return to her one true love; Carant, the druid, struggles with the prophecy that revealed the end of all magic in Tala; Glorhelm, the exiled elven prince, worries for the future of his homeland as his father battles insanity; the half-elf Glormuse fears for the fate of his kin in the north; Gathgar of Matochkin resigns himself to his fate and Kax, the thief, is plagued with memories of his past. 
Meanwhile, the now-awake Princess Faro and her guardian Halindal seek an elusive king; the witch Rozeka and her ward ready the residents of Gladewater for war; the old priest Payadanian shares the depth of Kajan Thar’s treachery with his trusted friends and King Hingril Frostbeard leads his dwarves to battle with his own kin. 
But as they continue their quest to retrieve magical artefacts that will aid them in the inevitable war against the darkness, Glorhelm and his companions discover threats at every turn – there is a sizeable bounty on their heads.
