Bandits, Bank Robbers and Three Smoking Hot Bananas details the lives of a few miserable residents of a run-down town called Moan-and-Groan-upon-Sea. Albert lives a wretched life with his heinous wife and his dog, Spot. When he is cheated out of winning the lottery, he teams up with his useless nephews, Cal and Tag, to get revenge on those who have wronged him. Hilarity ensues as their shenanigans lead the trio down unexpected paths.
Burgess’ style is somewhat reminiscent of Roald Dahl’s writing, in that it is witty, gritty and satirical. The author shows the characters in all their realistic glory, detailing their flaws as well as their more positive aspects, and children will be delighted at Burgess’ use of slapstick humour and his ‘all-guns-blazing’ approach to storytelling.
