A 'Mansion for Miners': Plas Mwynwyr, Rhosllannerchrugog

Kathryn Ellis & Peter Bolton
For more than eighty years the Miners’ Institute (known locally as the ‘Stiwt’) has dominated the physical and cultural landscape of Rhosllanerchrugog near Wrexham – one of the largest communities of the North Wales coalfield. Built in 1926, largely due to the contributions of local miners, the building has welcomed royalty and the political elite, but has also provided culture and entertainment for the working people of the community. Although much work has been done on the Institutes of South Wales, few studies deal with those in the north. This book aims to redress that balance. The authors bring together a wide range of archival evidence and photographs to trace the birth, decline and eventual resurrection of a building which continues to support the cultural and communal life of Rhos.

Am dros bedwar ugain mlynedd bu Institiwt y Mwynwyr (a adwaenir yn lleol fel y ‘Stiwt’) yn taflu ei gysgod dros dirlun daearyddol a diwylliannol Rhosllannerchrugog ger Wrecsam – un o gymunedau mwyaf maes glo Gogledd Cymru. Fe’i codwyd ym 1926, i raddau helaeth drwy gyfraniadau’r glowyr lleol, ac mae wedi estyn croeso i bwysigion brenhinol a gwleidyddol, ond hefyd wedi cynnig diwylliant ac adloniant i bobl yr ardal. Er bod llawer wedi ei gyhoeddi am Institiwtiau de Cymru, prin iawn yw’r astudiaethau sy’n ymdrin â’r sefydliadau hyn yn y gogledd. Bwriad y gyfrol hon yw gwneud yn iawn am hynny. Mae’r awduron wedi casglu tystiolaeth archifol helaeth, gan gynnwys lluniau, er mwyn olrhain hanes geni, dirywiad ac, ymhen hir a hwyr, adfywiad yr adeilad sy’n parhau i gynnal bywyd diwylliannol a chymunedol y Rhos.
